In mid-October, the banks of the Kikuchi River turn pink: about 1.5 million cosmos flowers bloom around the Shichijo Cosmos Bridge. Viewed from the pedestrian bridge above, it's one of Kumamoto's most photogenic — and completely free — autumn sights.
Two Cosmos Spots
1. Shichijo Cosmos Bridge (~1.5 million blooms)
The largest cosmos field in the prefecture, along the Kikuchi riverbed. Walk the dedicated pedestrian bridge for endless pink, white and magenta stretching down the river. Peak: around mid-October. Free.
2. Michi-no-Eki Kyokushi cosmos garden
Cosmos and sunflowers in the same frame (mid-October). The roadside station's farmers' market sells fresh Kikuchi vegetables, fruit and milk — perfect for villa cooking.
